50 Questions to Turn Your Daily Conversations into Discipleship Opportunities
I’ve been there. Sitting in my kitchen with a sister from my local church, longing for our conversation to move beyond the surface. I’ve also been on a walk with a friend, feeling the weight of an awkward silence, unsure of what to ask or how to guide the conversation toward something that would spiritually build us up.
Maybe you have felt that need too: the need to grow in the art of asking better questions and learning how to weave the gospel into your everyday conversations, so that any interaction can become an opportunity to encourage, exhort, and point one another to Christ.
This is why the apostle Paul’s instruction in Colossians 3:16 is so helpful for our everyday relationships: “Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”
If the Word of Christ is to dwell richly among us, then it must shape not only what we believe, but also how we speak to one another. Our conversations are among the ways God uses His Word, His Spirit, and His people to help us persevere.
God has given us His Word, His Spirit, and His people to help us persevere. That means our ordinary conversations (in the kitchen, in the car, on a walk, after the Sunday gathering, or over coffee) can become small spaces for spiritual growth.
Of course, this doesn't mean that we need to force every conversation or turn every interaction into a Bible lesson. But it does mean we can grow in listening with genuine interest, asking thoughtful questions, and looking for simple ways to point one another to the truth, beauty, and sufficiency of Christ.
For that reason, I have compiled (with the help of my sisters in my local church) a list of questions you can consider or keep close at hand. My prayer is that they will help you turn ordinary conversations into small spaces for encouragement, exhortation, and spiritual growth:
