OVERVIEW
Emmanuel Church of Winston Salem, NC is seeking a faithful undershepherd of Christ to assume the primary preaching and teaching role. We have three elders (two lay and one staff), five deacons, and average attendance of ~180. We broadly align with the SBC, and more closely with the Pillar Network and 9Marks. The Lord has worked for his own glory and the good of his people at Emmanuel through a collective commitment to:
A high view of God and His sovereignty in salvation (Reformed soteriology)
A commitment to God-centered worship and the centrality of the Word of God
Expository preaching as the normative means of proclaiming God’s truth
A healthy ecclesiology, grounded in biblical church structure and membership
A complementarian view of men’s and women’s roles in the church and home
A ministry that is Christ-centered and gospel-focused in both doctrine and practice
An emphasis on the priority of the ordinary means of grace
QUALIFICATIONS
Ministry Background: Previous pastoral or equivalent Christian ministry experience
Preaching/Teaching: Proven ability to handle the Word faithfully and apply it pastorally
Shepherding Orientation: Demonstrated care and connection across generational lines
Character: Spiritual maturity and qualifications aligned with 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1
Leadership: Reputation for managing his household well and leading effectively in the church
Confessional Alignment: Able to affirm the Abstract of Principles and the 1689 2LBC (with some exceptions)
Education: Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from an accredited seminary
RESPONSIBILITIES
Public Ministry of the Word: Regularly preach ~40 times per year and teach the Scriptures with clarity, depth, and pastoral sensitivity. Oversee the church’s Equip class ministry, including management of curriculum, development and supervision of teachers, and teaching classes
Private Ministry of the Word and Prayer: Provide pastoral care through biblical counseling, prayer, visitation, regular hospitality, and personal discipling relationships
Shepherding: Walk with God’s people through all seasons of life and faith, offering encouragement, correction, and biblical perspective
Equip the Saints: Cultivate an every-member ministry mentality, encouraging and equipping the body for gospel service
Worship Leadership: Plan and participate in leading public worship services that reflect reverence, joy, and theological depth
Elder and Deacon Collaboration: Work closely with fellow elders and deacons to shepherd and serve the congregation
Staff Oversight: Partner with the associate pastor to manage church staff and ministries
Leadership Development: Mentor men who aspire to pastoral ministry in cooperation with the elder team (2 Tim. 2:2)
